Aviva Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto Rated Updated August 2026

Aviva's Healthier Solutions is built around one thing most competitors charge extra for: unlimited out-patient cover as standard, with no annual cap on consultations, tests or scans. It also places no upper age limit on new applicants, which matters if you're comparing later in life.

The flip side is that Aviva gives you more ways to cut the premium than almost any other insurer, and two of them carry consequences worth understanding first. Trimming out-patient cover quietly removes benefits elsewhere, and the no-claims discount drops sharply once a claim passes £250. Both are covered below.

Years Of History

Aviva's roots stretch back over three centuries through a series of mergers including Norwich Union, with the Aviva name adopted in 2002.

FTSE

Ownership

Aviva plc is a publicly listed FTSE 100 company, one of the UK's largest composite insurers spanning home, car, life and health cover.

#5

2026 Ranking

Climbed from eighth to fifth in independent 2026 PMI ratings, with its star rating rising from four to four and a half.

Standout Feature

Unlimited out-patient cover as core, and no upper age limit for new applicants. Both are points of difference in this market.

Cover Detail

What Does Aviva's Healthier Solutions Cover?

Unlike the fully modular plans some insurers now offer, Aviva starts with a comprehensive core and lets you add to it or trim it back. This is what arrives as standard.

Unlimited

Out-Patient Treatment

Specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, MRI, CT and PET scans, X-rays and follow-up appointments, with no annual cap. Most competitors tier or charge for this.

In full

In-Patient & Day-Patient

Private room, nursing care, theatre fees, surgeon and anaesthetist fees, and intensive care where required.

Full

Cancer Cover

Diagnosis, treatment and aftercare as a core benefit on every policy, spanning surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted and hormone therapies, and palliative care.

Unlimited

Aviva Digital GP

Video GP consultations 24/7 with no cap per member, plus onward specialist referrals and a private prescription delivery service.

24/7

Stress Counselling Line

Confidential access to a trained counsellor, any time of day, 365 days a year, included as a value-added benefit.

15%

My Healthy Discount

A wellbeing assessment produces a health score. The higher the score, the larger the discount, up to 15% in your first year.

The out-patient trap

Trimming out-patient cover is one of the easiest ways to cut your Aviva premium, and one of the least understood. Take a limited out-patient benefit and multiple treatments draw on the same annual pot, but you also lose some in-patient and day-patient benefits attached to it, including complications of pregnancy and surgical procedures on teeth. Ask our broker partners to spell out exactly what drops away before you take the saving.

How It's Built

How An Aviva Policy Is Put Together

Start from a full core, then shape it up or down. Aviva gives you more levers here than most.

Step 1 · Fixed

Core Cover

Unlimited out-patient, in-patient and day-patient treatment, full cancer cover, digital GP, counselling line and mental health treatment. Present on every Healthier Solutions policy.

Step 2 · Add

Enhancements

Dental and optical cover, an enhanced mental health upgrade, therapies such as physiotherapy and osteopathy, a wider hospital list including Central London, and no-claims discount protection.

Step 3 · Trim

Ways To Cut The Cost

Raise the excess, add the 6-week NHS option, choose a smaller hospital list, reduce out-patient cover, or take Expert Select and let Aviva guide your specialist choice.

The Differentiator

The 6-Week Option Is Aviva's Best Lever

Add the 6-week option and you agree to use the NHS for in-patient or day-patient treatment whenever the NHS can do it within six weeks. If the wait is longer, you go private as normal. Your out-patient consultations and diagnostics stay fully private either way, regardless of NHS waiting times.

Why it works in practice

The procedures with the longest NHS waits are exactly the ones where you'd want to go private. Six-week waits are uncommon for surgery, so in most cases the option cuts your premium without changing what actually happens when you claim.

20–30%
Typical premium reduction reported by brokers for adding the 6-week option.

Two caveats. The option doesn't apply to cancer treatment or to services covered by add-ons, so those stay private throughout. And the saving figure above comes from broker analysis rather than Aviva's own published data, so treat it as indicative and check it against your actual quote.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

How Claiming Affects Your Aviva Premium

Aviva's no-claims discount is generous in one respect and unforgiving in another. Small claims won't touch it at all, which is welcome. But once a claim goes over £250, you drop three no-claims discount levels in one move.

That's a steeper fall than several competitors apply, and £250 is a low threshold given a single scan can exceed it. If you expect to claim, price the no-claims discount protection add-on alongside your quote, and compare it against The Exeter, whose £300 threshold and fifteen-tier structure work differently.

The Small Print

How Aviva Handles Pre-Existing Conditions

Like every UK health insurer, Aviva doesn't cover pre-existing conditions from day one. Under standard moratorium underwriting, if you go two years after your policy starts without medication, treatment, diagnostic tests or advice for a condition, that exclusion can lift.

Where Aviva stands out is at the other end. There's no upper age limit on new applications for Healthier Solutions, so it stays available when several insurers have closed the door. If you're comparing later in life, or switching after a renewal increase, that alone makes it worth including in your comparison. Ask our broker partners which underwriting route suits your history before comparing on price.

Worth Knowing

What Aviva's Trustpilot Score Actually Covers

Aviva's headline Trustpilot rating is strong, and you'll see it quoted on comparison sites as though it reflects the health insurance product. It doesn't. It covers Aviva's entire range, car, home and life insurance included.

The honest picture

Filter reviews to health insurance specifically and the feedback is more mixed, with recurring mentions of contact difficulties and claims frustrations. It isn't a large volume of negative feedback, and it doesn't outweigh the strength of the cover, but it's worth knowing the headline number isn't measuring what you think it's measuring. Insurers who publish a health-specific score are easier to judge on this.

Cost

How Much Does Aviva Health Insurance Cost?

Aviva sits slightly above the market average on a like-for-like comprehensive quote, and that's largely because unlimited out-patient cover is included rather than sold separately. Compared against a rival policy with out-patient added back in, the gap narrows considerably.

Broker research puts a basic policy for a young, healthy individual from around £45 a month, with comprehensive cover for an older applicant or a family running to £160 a month or more. Your own figure depends on age, postcode, hospital list, excess and which of the cost levers you use.

Excess levels

Aviva offers a wide range of voluntary excess levels running up to £5,000, one of the broadest in the market and a significant lever on price. Exact tiers vary by product and change periodically, so confirm the current options with our broker partners. For Employers

Aviva For Business

Aviva offers business health insurance under names including Solutions and Optimum, with similar core cover for employees and the same modular flexibility as the individual product. The SME-focused plan combines competitive pricing with cancer care and mental health cover as standard.

FAQs

Aviva Health Insurance FAQs

What does Aviva health insurance cover?

Healthier Solutions includes unlimited out-patient treatment as core, meaning specialist consultations, diagnostic tests, MRI, CT and PET scans and follow-ups with no annual cap. Alongside that you get in-patient and day-patient treatment, full cancer diagnosis, treatment and aftercare, mental health treatment, home nursing, private ambulance, unlimited Aviva Digital GP video appointments and a 24/7 stress counselling line. Dental, optical, therapies and an enhanced mental health upgrade are optional add-ons.

Does Aviva have an upper age limit for new customers?

No. Aviva places no upper age limit on new applicants for Healthier Solutions, which is a point of difference from insurers that restrict entry for older customers. If you're comparing later in life, that alone makes Aviva worth including.

What is Aviva's 6-week option?

You agree to use the NHS for in-patient or day-patient treatment where the NHS can provide it within six weeks. If the wait is longer, you go private as normal, and your out-patient consultations and diagnostics stay private either way. Brokers typically report savings in the region of 20 to 30%. It doesn't apply to cancer treatment or to services covered by add-ons.

How does claiming affect an Aviva policy?

Small claims don't affect your no-claims discount at all. But once a claim exceeds £250 you drop three no-claims discount levels, which is steeper than several competitors apply and a low threshold given a single scan can pass it. No-claims discount protection is available as an add-on and is worth pricing if you expect to claim.

Can I reduce my Aviva premium?

Yes, and Aviva gives you more levers than most: a wide range of voluntary excess levels, the 6-week NHS option, a smaller hospital list, reduced out-patient cover, and Expert Select where Aviva guides your specialist choice. Be careful with the out-patient one, since reducing it also removes some linked in-patient and day-patient benefits.

What happens if I reduce Aviva's out-patient cover?

You take a capped annual out-patient benefit instead of unlimited, and multiple treatments then draw on the same pot. Less obviously, you also lose certain in-patient and day-patient benefits tied to out-patient cover, including complications of pregnancy and surgical procedures on teeth. Ask our broker partners to list exactly what falls away at the level you're considering.

Is Aviva's Trustpilot score specific to health insurance?

No. Aviva's headline Trustpilot rating covers its full product range including car, home and life insurance. Filtered to health insurance specifically, feedback is more mixed, so the headline figure isn't a clean measure of the health product.

Is Aviva health insurance good value?

It sits slightly above market average on headline price, but includes unlimited out-patient cover as standard where most competitors cap it or charge extra. The fair comparison is against a rival quote with out-patient added back in, and on that basis Aviva is usually competitive. Its range of cost levers also means it can be configured down further than most.
