Senior Health Insurance

Compare Senior Health Insurance Quotes By Age

Updated July 2026 Rated Excellent By Darren Lewis, Health Insurance Specialist

You can still get private health insurance in your 60s, 70s and beyond, and often with no upper age limit at all. But the right insurer, and the right price, genuinely depends on exactly which decade you're in, and most guides gloss over that.

Cover typically costs more as you age, roughly five times a healthy 20-year-old's premium by your 70s, but several major insurers accept new applicants with no upper limit whatsoever. We break it down honestly by age band below.

By Age

Cost And Availability By Decade

Whether you're in your 60s, 70s or 80s, here's honestly what to expect, cost and cover availability both change meaningfully by decade.

60s~£130-£180/monthYes, all major insurers accept new applicants in this age band
70s~£200-£320/monthYes, Aviva, Bupa and Saga have no upper age limit; most others accept up to 75-80
80s~£280-£400+/monthYes, but options narrow, Aviva, Bupa, Saga (no limit) and National Friendly (to 85) remain open to new applicants

New applicant vs existing policyholder, a crucial difference

These age limits apply specifically to people applying for cover for the first time. If you already have a policy, most insurers will keep renewing it well beyond these ages, sometimes into your 90s, at your provider's discretion. Someone already covered isn't in the same position as someone applying fresh.

Saga is worth a specific mention here: it specialises in cover for the over-50s, is underwritten by Bupa, and has no maximum age limit for new applicants, genuinely one of the most senior-friendly names in the market by design. See our full age limits guide for insurer-by-insurer detail.

Cost Factors

What Else Affects The Price?

Beyond age, these are the biggest levers on your premium.

Number Insured

Premiums are based on how many people are covered, you can often insure a spouse too.

Smoker Status

Non-smokers typically receive lower premiums.

Cover Level

More comprehensive cover costs more than a basic, inpatient-only policy.

Policy Excess

A higher excess can meaningfully reduce your monthly premium.

Underwriting Type

Moratorium underwriting is usually cheaper but affects how pre-existing conditions are handled.

Your Postcode

Healthcare costs more in some areas of the UK than others.

Switching Made Easier

Can I Switch Without Losing Cover For An Existing Condition?

Often, yes, and this matters more the older you are, since existing conditions become more common with age.

Continued Personal Medical Exclusions (CPME) means that if a new insurer agrees to match your current terms, conditions already accepted under your existing policy can continue to be covered, without restarting underwriting from scratch.

1

Your new insurer reviews your current terms and any accepted conditions.

2

If they agree to match them, those conditions transfer across under CPME.

3

Anything not previously covered is underwritten as normal.

FAQs

Senior Health Insurance FAQs

Is there an upper age limit for health insurance?

It varies by insurer. Aviva, Bupa and Saga have no upper age limit for new applicants. Others cap new entries somewhere between 70 and 85, National Friendly to 85, The Exeter and Vitality to 80, AXA to 75, Freedom to 70. Existing policyholders can generally keep renewing well beyond these caps.

How much does health insurance cost for someone in their 70s?

Typically £200-£320 a month for comprehensive cover, roughly five times what a healthy 20-year-old would pay, reflecting the higher statistical likelihood of claiming.

Can I still get health insurance in my 80s?

Yes, options narrow but Aviva, Bupa, Saga (all no upper limit) and National Friendly (to age 85) still accept new applicants. Premiums are typically £280-£400+ a month at this stage.

Will pre-existing conditions be covered?

Usually excluded initially for new policies, depending on the underwriting method chosen. If you're switching insurer, Continued Personal Medical Exclusions (CPME) can sometimes let you keep cover for a condition already accepted under your current policy.

Can I switch my senior health insurance to another insurer?

Yes, you can review the market at any time. If you find better value with equal or better cover, we can help you switch hassle-free, with no cancellation fees.

Does a health insurance broker charge a fee?

No, brokers are paid commission by the insurer for a successful introduction, so advice is free to you, with no impact on your premium.
