AXA Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto 5-Star (Personal Health) Updated August 2026

AXA Health is one of the UK's largest health insurers, with over 2.8 million members and a medical network of more than 600 hospitals, clinics and scanning centres. It's also the insurer most people get confused about, because AXA sells three different individual policies and they work in very different ways.

Read this before you compare anything else on AXA: the flexible building-blocks product you'll see described in most reviews is the AXA Health Plan, which you can only buy direct from AXA. It carries two exclusions that are unusual for the market. Personal Health, the plan available through brokers, works differently.

AXA Sells Three Different Individual Policies

Most AXA reviews describe one product and call it "AXA". That causes real confusion, because the three plans differ on underwriting, exclusions and even whether a broker can quote for them at all.

PlanHow You Buy ItHow It's BuiltUnderwriting
AXA Health Plan Direct from AXA only. Not available through brokers No core cover at all. Four building blocks you assemble yourself Three-year moratorium only. No full medical underwriting
Personal Health Through brokers, or direct by phone Core in-patient and day-patient cover, with optional modules on top Moratorium or full medical underwriting
Health For You Through brokers Budget option with a more restricted hospital list Moratorium or full medical underwriting
Why this matters when you compare

The AXA Health Plan is one of very few UK policies you cannot buy through a broker. If you want a broad market comparison alongside your AXA quote, Personal Health or Health For You are the plans our broker partners can actually place. The two unusual exclusions covered further down this page apply to the AXA Health Plan, so confirm which plan you're being quoted on before comparing on price.

More than 600 hospitals, clinics and scanning centres across the UK, though the list you can use depends on the option you choose.

3yr

Direct access for muscle, bone and joint problems and for cancer, letting you skip the GP referral step entirely.

Cover Detail

What Does The AXA Health Plan Cover?

Four building blocks, chosen individually. Take one, two, three or all four. Every policy also comes with a set of standard benefits regardless of which blocks you pick.

Unlimited

Out-Patient Diagnosis & Care

Specialist consultations, unlimited diagnostic tests and scans including CT, MRI and PET, plus out-patient surgery and up to 10 physiotherapy, osteopathy or chiropractic sessions a year.

£50

In-Patient & Day-Patient Care

Hospital treatment and tests, plus an NHS cash benefit of £50 a day up to £2,000 a year, parental accommodation, and up to £120 a night for a relative's hotel stay.

£5,000

Cancer Care

In-patient, day-patient and out-patient cancer treatment with unlimited specialist consultations, plus £1,000 for wigs, £2,000 for specialist clothing and up to £5,000 for prostheses.

Included

Mental Health Care

In-patient, day-patient and out-patient mental health treatment, including psychiatrist consultations and fees for CBT therapists and psychologists. Can't be taken on its own.

Standard

On Every Policy

Online GP appointments, a 24/7 health support line, a mental health support app and an annual home test kit for cholesterol and blood sugar.

40%

Member Offers

Up to 40% off Nuffield Health gym membership, 25% off health assessments with Nuffield or Circle, and a fitness app.

Watch the consultation limit

You choose either three specialist consultations a year or unlimited. Picking three cuts the premium substantially, but those three are shared across in-patient, day-patient and out-patient care, so an allowance that sounds workable can be used up quickly. Tests and scans are always unlimited, and consultations under the cancer or mental health blocks don't count towards the cap.

How It's Built

How An AXA Health Plan Is Put Together

Three decisions, and each one moves the premium significantly.

Step 1 · Your blocks

Pick Your Cover

Choose from out-patient, in-patient and day-patient, cancer, and mental health. No compulsory core. On a family policy each person can pick a different combination, and you can add up to eight members across four generations.

+
Step 2 · Who chooses

Specialist & Hospital

Let AXA source your specialist and pick foundation or guided. Or choose your own and pick flexible or open. Choosing your own specialist typically costs around a third more.

+
Step 3 · The levers

Consultations & Excess

Three specialist consultations a year or unlimited, then an excess of £0, £100, £250, £500, £1,000 or £2,500. You can also pay to protect your no-claims discount.

The Differentiator

Direct Access Without A GP Referral

Most UK insurers need a GP referral letter before you can see a specialist. AXA's muscle, bone and joint service, long branded Working Body, lets you self-refer for back pain, joint problems and sports injuries. Its cancer service works the same way. Mental health support runs through the Stronger Minds team.

Why this scores well

Musculoskeletal problems are among the most common reasons people claim, and the GP referral step is often where the delay sits. Independent 2026 analysis rated AXA joint fifth of ten providers for treatment pathways, largely on the strength of this service alongside its digital healthlines.

No GP referral
For muscle, bone and joint problems, and for cancer diagnostics.

For anything outside those services you'll still need a GP referral, and any specialist you use has to be approved by AXA.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

Two Exclusions That Are Out Of Step With The Market

The AXA Health Plan's three-year moratorium is more generous than the usual five. But two specific exclusions sit outside that moratorium entirely, and both are unusual enough that they should shape whether you consider this plan at all.

All previous cancers are excluded, permanently

Not excluded for a period, excluded outright, no matter how long ago the cancer occurred or how long it's been in full remission. A cancer resolved 20 years ago in childhood would still be excluded. Most insurers treat cancer like any other pre-existing condition, covering it once you've been symptom-free for two continuous years, so this is a significant departure and makes the plan a poor fit for cancer survivors.

No mental health cover after a psychiatrist referral

The mental health block isn't available at all to anyone referred to a psychiatrist in the past five years. Not the specific condition excluded, the whole benefit withdrawn. AXA distinguishes psychiatrists from psychologists and counsellors, which suggests it's aimed at more serious conditions, but it still denies cover rather than excluding the condition. If this applies to you, compare how other insurers handle the same history in our mental health cover guide.

And a wrinkle in the three-year moratorium

The shorter look-back doesn't apply universally. If you've had diabetes, or tests relating to it, in the past five years, a number of related conditions are excluded. Similar restrictions apply after a raised PSA result. Ask our broker partners to check your own history against this before assuming the three-year period works in your favour.

Where You're Treated

AXA's Four Hospital Options

Which two you can choose between depends entirely on whether you let AXA source your specialist.

Cost

How Much Does AXA Health Insurance Cost?

Because the plan is modular, the price swings enormously with the choices you make. The three biggest levers are how many building blocks you take, whether you accept three specialist consultations rather than unlimited, and whether you let AXA source your specialist rather than choosing your own.

Independent 2026 research quoted an individual on the South Coast taking in-patient, out-patient and cancer cover, with unlimited consultations, the guided option and a £250 excess, at roughly £74 a month at age 30, £96 at 40, £131 at 50 and £190 at 60. A leaner build with three consultations and the foundation hospital list comes in considerably lower. Your own quote will vary by age, postcode and every option above.

No family discount

Unlike Bupa and several competitors, the AXA Health Plan doesn't offer a family discount, and independent analysis marked it down on affordability partly because its no-claims discount percentages aren't published. If you're insuring a family, that's worth pricing against insurers who discount multi-member policies before you decide. See our health insurance cost guide and free price calculator for wider context.

For Employers

AXA For Business

AXA has a strong presence in the employer benefits market, with small business and corporate health plans alongside its individual range. The modular approach translates well to company schemes, letting employers set different cover levels across teams, and a guided option is available to bring scheme costs down.

FAQs

AXA Health Insurance FAQs

What does AXA health insurance cover?

On the AXA Health Plan you build cover from four blocks: out-patient diagnosis and care, in-patient and day-patient care, cancer care, and mental health care. There's no compulsory core, so you take only what you want. Every policy also includes online GP appointments, a 24/7 health support line, a mental health support app, an annual home test kit and member discounts. Personal Health, the broker-available plan, works differently, with core in-patient and day-patient cover included and modules added on top.

Can I buy AXA health insurance through a broker?

Not the AXA Health Plan, which is sold direct by AXA only. Personal Health and Health For You are available through brokers. This matters if you want your AXA quote compared against the wider market, since a broker can place those two but not the AXA Health Plan.

Does AXA cover previous cancer diagnoses?

Not on the AXA Health Plan. It excludes all previous cancers permanently, regardless of how long ago the cancer occurred or how long it's been in remission. Most other insurers treat cancer like any other pre-existing condition, meaning it can become covered after two continuous symptom-free years under moratorium. If you're a cancer survivor, this makes the AXA Health Plan a poor fit and it's worth comparing insurers with standard moratorium terms instead.

Does AXA cover mental health?

Yes, as one of the four building blocks, covering in-patient, day-patient and out-patient treatment including psychiatrist consultations and CBT therapist and psychologist fees. Two conditions apply: it can't be bought on its own, so you need at least one other block, and it isn't available at all to anyone referred to a psychiatrist in the past five years.

How long is AXA's moratorium period?

Three years on the AXA Health Plan, shorter than the five-year period most insurers use, which can mean fewer exclusions at the start. There are exceptions though: if you've had diabetes or related tests in the past five years, several related conditions are excluded, and similar restrictions follow a raised PSA result. The AXA Health Plan doesn't offer full medical underwriting as an alternative.

Do you need a GP referral for AXA health insurance?

Usually yes, but not for its muscle, bone and joint service or its cancer diagnostic service, both of which you can self-refer into. Any specialist you then see still needs to be on AXA's approved list.

Can each family member choose different cover with AXA?

Yes, on the AXA Health Plan. Each person named on the policy can select their own combination of building blocks, and you can add up to eight members spanning four generations including grandparents, with no requirement that everyone lives at the same address. There's a maximum joining age of 74, and no family discount is applied.

What excess options does AXA offer?

£0, £100, £250, £500, £1,000 or £2,500 on the AXA Health Plan. A higher excess lowers your premium but means paying more towards a claim, so the right level is usually the most you'd comfortably pay if you needed treatment tomorrow.
