Freedom Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★ Defaqto 4-Star (Elite) Updated August 2026

Freedom is one of very few UK health insurers that doesn't price on your postcode. Live in central London or a market town in Yorkshire and you pay the same for identical cover, which changes the maths considerably if you're somewhere expensive.

It also offers a 2-year fixed premium, so a claim in your first year doesn't move your price at first renewal. That matters, because beyond that window Freedom moved to performance-based renewals after a 2024 ownership change, and some customers have reported steep increases. Both sides are covered below.

Freedom At A Glance

2003

Founded

A trading name of Freedom Healthnet Ltd, based in Poole, FCA-regulated and underwritten through syndicates at Lloyd's of London.

Standout Feature

Postcode-blind pricing. Your location doesn't factor into your premium, which is rare in this market.

3

Plans

Elite (flagship, Defaqto 4-star), Essentials (budget cash-benefit, Defaqto 2-star) and Worldwide (international cover).

!

Worth Knowing

A 2024 ownership change replaced community rating with performance-based renewals. Read the renewal section before buying.

Cover Detail

What Does Freedom Elite Cover?

Every Elite policy carries the same core, then you add modules on top. This is what arrives before you choose anything.

In full

In-Patient & Day-Patient

Full hospital treatment cover on every Elite policy, with the same core benefits regardless of which add-ons you take.

Core

Cancer Cover

Included as standard rather than sold separately, with drug access that can extend beyond what the NHS will fund.

Open

Hospital List

A traditional open list rather than a guided option, giving access to nearly all UK private hospitals and consultants up to Freedom's published fee schedule.

2 years

Fixed Premium

A 2-year fixed premium option means that even if you claim in year one, your price stays unchanged at first renewal.

£0

Location Loading

No postcode rating at all. A 35-year-old in Newcastle and one in central London pay the same for identical cover.

One

Child Pricing

You pay for one child regardless of how many you add, which makes Freedom worth pricing for larger families.

Add-ons are where Elite gets built

Core cover is fixed and identical on every Elite policy. Out-patient cover, mental health, alternative therapies, dental, optical and private GP consultations are all separate modules. Freedom is also one of relatively few insurers offering cover for GP-referred diagnostic tests, which is worth asking about specifically.

The Differentiator

Postcode-Blind Pricing, And Who It Suits

Almost every UK insurer charges more where private hospitals are expensive, which in practice means London and the South East carry a meaningful loading. Freedom doesn't apply one at all.

Same price, wherever you live

The advantage is entirely dependent on where you are. In a high-cost postcode it can be substantial, sometimes cited at around a quarter of the premium elsewhere. In a lower-cost area it may be worth little or nothing.

£0
Location loading, against a surcharge that can run to roughly 25% with other insurers in expensive areas.

So the honest advice is to price it both ways. If you're in London or the South East, Freedom deserves to be in your comparison on this alone. If you're not, judge it on the cover and the renewal terms rather than assuming it's automatically cheaper.

Products

Elite, Essentials Or Worldwide?

Three quite different products, and picking the right one matters more here than with most insurers.

Freedom Elite

The flagship and what most people actually want. Full in-patient and day-patient cover, cancer care as core, an open hospital list, and modular add-ons. Defaqto 4-star.

Freedom Essentials

A budget alternative paying a fixed cash benefit rather than covering treatment costs, usually requiring an NHS-led diagnosis first. Cheaper, but not comprehensive cover. Defaqto 2-star.

Freedom Worldwide

An international health insurance plan for UK residents living or working abroad, with the option to move back to Elite on return.

The Defaqto gap between Elite at four stars and Essentials at two is the clearest signal here. If you're comparing Freedom against a comprehensive policy elsewhere, make sure you're quoted for Elite.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

The 2024 Ownership Change And Your Renewal

Freedom changed ownership in 2024 and moved away from community-rated pricing towards performance-based renewals, meaning your own claims history now influences what you pay more directly than it used to.

Independent analysis has described this as removing one of Freedom's previously distinctive features, and some customers have reported renewal increases in the region of 20 to 80% following a claim. That's a wide range drawn from customer reports rather than published data, so treat it as a signal to ask questions rather than a figure to plan around.

The 2-year fixed premium is the mitigation

Freedom's 2-year fixed premium option protects you at first renewal even if you claim in year one, which directly addresses the concern above for that window. Ask our broker partners two things: is the 2-year fixed premium included in this quote, and how is my price calculated once it ends? Get the answer before you buy rather than at renewal.

Cost

What Does Freedom Cost?

Third-party sample quotes put Elite premiums across a 25 to 65 age range at roughly £39 to £240 a month for core cover, rising to £75 to £445 once fuller add-ons are included. Essentials sits considerably lower, reflecting that it pays fixed cash benefits rather than treatment costs.

Those are broker sample quotes rather than Freedom's published pricing, and they predate the performance-based renewal change, so treat them as a starting point. Your own figure depends on age, cover level, excess and which modules you take, though notably not on where you live.

Compare year two, not just year one

Freedom's headline price can look strong, particularly in an expensive postcode, but the renewal structure is where the risk sits. Price the 2-year fixed option, then ask what happens after it. For wider context see our health insurance cost guide and free price calculator.

Worth Knowing

A Small Review Base Needs Context

Freedom's Trustpilot presence is small, with one source counting around 120 reviews in total against the tens of thousands Bupa and Aviva carry. That doesn't make the score meaningless, but each individual review carries far more weight in the average, and the picture is less tested than a larger insurer's.

Read a spread of recent reviews yourself rather than relying on the headline figure, and pay particular attention to anything covering renewals rather than initial purchase.

FAQs

Freedom Health Insurance FAQs

What does Freedom Elite cover?

Every Elite policy carries the same core: full in-patient and day-patient treatment, cancer cover including drugs that can go beyond NHS funding, and an open hospital list giving access to nearly all UK private hospitals and consultants up to Freedom's published fee schedule. Out-patient cover, mental health, therapies, dental, optical, private GP consultations and GP-referred diagnostics are modular add-ons.

What does postcode-blind pricing mean?

Freedom charges the same premium for identical cover wherever in the UK you live. Most insurers load premiums in areas with expensive private hospitals, and that loading can reach around a quarter of the premium in London and the South East. If you're in a high-cost postcode this is a substantial advantage. If you're not, the benefit is smaller, so compare properly rather than assuming.

Does Freedom offer a fixed premium?

Yes. Freedom offers a 2-year fixed premium, meaning that even if you claim in your first year, your premium stays unchanged at first renewal. It's a meaningful protection given the renewal changes below, so confirm whether it's included in any quote you're given.

Has Freedom had renewal pricing issues?

Following a 2024 ownership change, Freedom replaced community-rated pricing with performance-based renewals, so your own claims history now affects your price more directly. Some customers have reported increases in the region of 20 to 80% after claiming. Those figures come from customer reports rather than published data, but the structural change is well documented. The 2-year fixed premium protects the first renewal.

Should I choose Freedom Elite or Essentials?

Elite, if you want comprehensive private medical insurance. Essentials is cheaper but pays fixed cash benefits rather than covering treatment costs, and usually needs an NHS-led diagnosis first. The Defaqto ratings reflect that gap, four stars for Elite against two for Essentials.

Is Freedom part of AXA?

No, they're entirely separate companies. Freedom is an independent UK specialist founded in 2003, trading as Freedom Healthnet Ltd, FCA-regulated and underwritten through syndicates at Lloyd's of London. AXA Health is part of the global AXA Group.

Is Freedom good for families?

It's worth pricing. Freedom charges for one child regardless of how many you add, which combined with postcode-blind pricing can make it competitive for larger families in expensive areas.
