The Exeter Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto 5-Star ★★★★ 4.3/5 Trustpilot Reviewed by Darren Lewis · Updated July 2026

The Exeter is one of only three UK health insurers to score a full 5 stars in independent 2026 industry ratings. It's also the market's most established mutual insurer, member-owned since 1927, with no shareholders and every penny of profit reinvested back into member benefits.

Less well-known than Bupa or Aviva, but genuinely distinctive: a market-leading no-claims discount structure that protects you from small claims, and underwriting flexibility that makes it a strong option if you have a more complex medical history.

The Exeter At A Glance

1927

Founded

Started as the Exeter Hospital Aid Society, later Exeter Family Friendly Society, rebranded as The Exeter in 2015.

Ownership

A mutual friendly society with 90,000+ members and no shareholders. Profits are reinvested into member benefits, not dividends.

1/3

2026 Rating

One of only three UK health insurers to score a full 5 stars in independent 2026 PMI ratings.

£300

Standout Feature

A market-leading no-claims discount structure: claims under £300 don't reset your accumulated discount.

Why It's Different

What Does Being A Mutual Actually Mean For You?

Unlike Bupa, Aviva or AXA, The Exeter has no shareholders to answer to. Every policyholder is a member, and surplus profit gets reinvested into the business rather than paid out as dividends.

In practical terms, that shapes how premiums, underwriting and claims are handled. The Exeter still has to raise prices at renewal in line with rising treatment costs, like every insurer does, but it has no obligation to hit shareholder return targets on top of that. Increases are driven by actual claims experience and healthcare cost inflation, not a profit margin to protect.

Products

Health+: Traditional Or Guided

Health+ is The Exeter's only PMI product, but it comes in two forms depending on how much control you want over hospital choice.

Health+ Traditional

Choose from three hospital list tiers yourself, giving you more control over where you're treated. Core cover includes inpatient and day-patient treatment, cancer care, home nursing, parental accommodation, NHS cash benefit and remote GP access. Diagnostic scans needed during treatment (CT, MRI, PET) are included as standard, though outpatient consultations and diagnostic tests before a diagnosis is confirmed are typically an add-on.

Health+ Guided

Around 14% cheaper than Traditional. The Exeter recommends your specialist and hospital for you, trading some choice for a lower premium. Core cover is the same as Traditional, just with the guided referral route instead of open hospital choice.

The Real Differentiator

A No-Claims Discount That Actually Protects You

Most insurers reset some or all of your no-claims discount the moment you make a claim, even a small one. The Exeter does things differently.

The £300 small-claims threshold

Claims under this amount don't affect your accumulated no-claims discount at all.

£300
Claim below this, and your NCD stays exactly where it was.

Over several years, this can meaningfully slow how fast your premium grows, since routine, lower-cost claims won't set your discount back to zero the way they might with other insurers. It's also worth asking about The Exeter's Community Rated option at renewal, an alternative to individual NCD tracking that can suit some customers better.

Digital Health

The HealthWise App

The Exeter's HealthWise app has seen a sharp rise in usage as members lean into telehealth, and it's included for all Health+ members subject to policy terms. Among its most-used features: up to 6 free mental health therapy sessions a year.

What's included

  • Virtual GP consultations
  • Physiotherapy sessions
  • Up to 6 free mental health therapy sessions a year
  • Dietitian sessions
  • Second medical opinions

Worth knowing

  • App-based benefits are typically subject to policy terms and fair-use limits
  • Usage-based extras like these can change over time, so check current terms
  • Not a substitute for the core inpatient/outpatient cover itself
Underwriting

A Strong Option If You Have A Complex Medical History

The Exeter is often recommended for people with more complicated medical backgrounds, thanks to its severity-based approach to disclosure questions and generally flexible underwriting options.

If you're switching from another insurer, it's worth asking specifically about how The Exeter treats your existing medical history. See our guide to how underwriting affects pre-existing conditions for the full picture on moratorium, full medical and switch underwriting before you compare.

The Small Print

What The Exeter Doesn't Cover

As with every UK insurer, pre-existing conditions aren't covered from day one, and how they're assessed depends on the underwriting route you choose. Chronic, long-term conditions requiring ongoing management are also excluded, as is any treatment without a GP or approved referral route.

Outpatient consultations and diagnostic tests taken before a diagnosis is confirmed typically sit outside core cover on Health+, so check whether you need to add this if you'd rather not rely on the NHS for that initial stage.

Cost

How Much Does The Exeter Cost?

As an illustrative guide, a healthy 30-year-old on Health+ Guided could pay from around £35 a month, rising to roughly £50 for fuller comprehensive cover with extras. A 60-year-old on similar comprehensive cover might pay closer to £120 a month. These figures are third-party estimates rather than The Exeter's own published pricing, so treat them as a rough guide only.

FAQs

The Exeter Health Insurance FAQs

Is The Exeter a good health insurer?

Yes, it's one of only three UK insurers to score a full 5 stars in independent 2026 industry ratings, and holds a Defaqto 5-star rating on its Health+ product.

What does it mean that The Exeter is a mutual?

It has no shareholders. Every policyholder is a member, and profits are reinvested into the business rather than paid out as dividends, which can shape more favourable pricing and claims decisions over time.

What's the difference between Health+ Traditional and Guided?

Traditional lets you choose from three hospital list tiers yourself. Guided is around 14% cheaper, with The Exeter recommending your specialist and hospital instead.

How does The Exeter's no-claims discount work?

Claims under £300 don't affect your accumulated no-claims discount at all, a more forgiving structure than many competitors who reset some or all of your NCD after any claim.

Is The Exeter good for people with a complex medical history?

It's often recommended for exactly this, thanks to its severity-based disclosure questions and flexible underwriting options, though it's always worth comparing your specific circumstances across insurers.
