Vitality Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto Rated ★★★★ 4.3/5 Trustpilot Reviewed by Darren Lewis · Updated July 2026

Vitality is built differently from every other insurer in our comparison. Instead of a traditional no-claims discount, it uses ABC pricing, based on your Age, Base medical inflation, and Claims, where your Vitality status from staying active can actively reduce how much your premium rises at renewal.

The rewards are genuinely substantial if you use them, discounted gym memberships, an Apple Watch that can become effectively free, and weekly perks. The honest question is whether you'll actually engage with it, since the model works against you if you don't.

Origins

Rebranded from PruHealth in 2014, now part of the Discovery Group, the South African insurer that pioneered the shared-value rewards model.

Standout Feature

A rewards ecosystem, gym discounts, an Apple Watch benefit, and weekly perks, built into the core product rather than bolted on.

Pricing Model

Uses ABC pricing (Age, Base inflation, Claims) instead of a traditional no-claims discount. Your engagement level affects renewal increases.

Best For

People who'll genuinely use the rewards and stay active. The value proposition weakens significantly if you won't engage with it.

How It Works

The Vitality Programme: Points And Status

You earn Vitality points for activities like daily steps, gym visits, annual health checks and logging activity through a connected device. Points build your Vitality status, and your status level unlocks better rewards and can influence your renewal price.

The Rewards

What You Can Actually Get

The rewards are real, and for engaged members, genuinely add up.

Apple Watch Benefit

Get an Apple Watch for a reduced upfront cost. Stay active and hit your monthly targets, and Vitality can reduce or eliminate the ongoing monthly payments.

Active Rewards

Hit your weekly activity target and claim a reward: a coffee, a smoothie, or a cinema ticket at participating partners.

Gym Discounts

Up to 50% off memberships at Virgin Active, Nuffield Health and PureGym, among the strongest gym discount offerings of any UK insurer.

Waitrose Cashback

Up to 25% cashback on "Good Health" food items, rising to 40% if you hold both health and life cover with Vitality.

Real Discounts At Real Gyms

The gym discounts aren't small print, up to 50% off at major chains is genuinely one of the strongest offers of its kind in UK health insurance.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

How ABC Pricing Actually Affects Your Renewal

Most insurers use a no-claims discount: don't claim, and your premium drops. Vitality works differently. Your renewal is shaped by three factors instead.

A

Age

Your premium rises each year simply because you're a year older, the same as with any insurer.

B

Base Inflation

Rising medical treatment costs across the whole market push renewal prices up industry-wide.

C

Claims

Whether you or your family have claimed, and your Vitality status, both factor into the final figure.

Family claims are pooled

  • One family member's claim can push the whole policy into a higher pricing band, not just their own cover.

Disengagement costs you

  • Stop earning points and lose your status, and your premium can rise faster than it would with a traditional insurer.

Reported activity-based savings can reach up to 25% for consistently active members. If you know you won't keep up regular activity tracking and health checks, it's worth comparing Vitality carefully against insurers using a simpler, more traditional pricing structure.

Beyond The Rewards

The Core Cover Itself

Strip away the rewards programme and Vitality's core cover holds up well: comprehensive cancer cover is included as standard, and it offers self-referral pathways for physiotherapy and talking therapies, letting you skip the GP referral step for those specific treatments. It's also one of relatively few UK insurers to offer weight-loss surgery cover, an unusual inclusion in the wider PMI market.

As with every insurer, pre-existing conditions aren't covered from day one, and how quickly a mental health condition or other pre-existing condition becomes covered depends on the underwriting route you choose.

Cost

How Much Does Vitality Cost?

Vitality's premiums generally sit above the UK market average for equivalent cover. For engaged members, the value of the rewards programme can offset a meaningful part of that difference, but it's worth being honest with yourself about whether you'll actually use it before assuming the numbers work in your favour.

AgeExample Monthly Price
30 (mid-level, £200 excess)From around £44/mo
60 to 70 (comprehensive cover)Around £160 to £210/mo

Indicative figures based on published 2026 market examples, not Vitality's own quoted pricing. Vitality has a notably low starting price for younger applicants, roughly the same minimum whether you're 20 or in your early 30s, before rising more steeply with age from around 50 onwards.

FAQs

Vitality Health Insurance FAQs

Is Vitality health insurance worth it?

It depends heavily on whether you'll actually engage with the rewards programme. For active members who use the gym discounts, Apple Watch benefit and weekly rewards, the value can be substantial. For those who won't engage, a more traditional insurer may work out better.

How does Vitality's Apple Watch benefit work?

You pay a reduced upfront cost for the watch, then hit monthly activity targets to reduce or eliminate the ongoing monthly payments.

What is ABC pricing?

Vitality's renewal pricing model, based on your Age, Base medical cost inflation, and Claims activity, with your Vitality status also playing a role, rather than a traditional no-claims discount.

Does one family member's claim affect everyone's premium?

Yes, on a family policy, claims are pooled, so one member's claim can push the whole policy into a higher pricing band at renewal.

How much can Vitality's rewards programme actually save you?

Reported activity-based savings can reach up to 25% for consistently active, engaged members, though this depends on maintaining regular activity tracking and health checks.
