Vitality Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto Rated Updated August 2026

Vitality's Personal Healthcare plan is priced differently from every other insurer in this comparison. There's no no-claims discount. Instead, ABC pricing sets your renewal from your Age, Base medical inflation and Claims, with your Vitality status adjusting the last of those three.

The rewards are substantial and the core cover is stronger than the gym-discount reputation suggests, particularly on mental health. But the behavioural discount is smaller than most people assume, and the model can work against you if you don't engage. Both are set out plainly below.

Vitality At A Glance

2014

Origins

Rebranded from PruHealth in 2014, now part of the Discovery Group, the South African insurer that pioneered the shared-value rewards model.

ABC

Pricing Model

Age, Base inflation and Claims, with Vitality status adjusting the claims element. No traditional no-claims discount at all.

8

Underrated Strength

Eight CBT or counselling sessions a year in core cover, bookable without a GP referral. One of the strongest mental health offerings on the market.

?

Best For

People who will use the rewards and stay active. The proposition weakens considerably if you won't engage with the app.

Cover Detail

What Does Vitality's Personal Healthcare Cover?

Strip away the rewards programme and the underlying policy is stronger than Vitality's fitness-brand reputation suggests. This is what sits in the core plan.

Full

Cancer Cover

Comprehensive cancer cover included as standard rather than sold as an add-on, spanning diagnosis through treatment and ongoing care.

8

Mental Health Sessions

CBT or counselling sessions a year, bookable directly through the Vitality app without a GP referral, plus Headspace and a library of digital wellbeing exercises.

No GP

Self-Referral Pathways

Physiotherapy and talking therapies can be accessed directly, skipping the GP referral step that slows most claims down.

50%

Gym Discounts

Up to half off flexible monthly membership at Virgin Active, Nuffield Health and PureGym. The strongest gym offer of any UK insurer.

Weekly

Active Rewards

Hit your weekly activity points and claim a Caffè Nero drink or an Odeon or Vue cinema ticket, plus an app-based monthly reward game.

Unusual

Weight-Loss Surgery

One of relatively few UK insurers to offer cover for weight-loss surgery, which most exclude outright.

The mental health point is the one most reviews miss

Eight sessions a year with no GP referral, bookable in the app, is materially better than most insurers offer as standard. An enhanced add-on extends this to unlimited CBT and counselling, £1,500 of out-patient mental health spend and 28 days of in-patient or day-patient treatment. If mental health matters to your decision, compare this properly rather than assuming Vitality is only about gyms.

How It's Built

How A Vitality Policy Is Put Together

Two decisions like any insurer, plus a third that no other insurer has.

Step 1 · Fixed

Core Cover

In-patient and day-patient treatment, comprehensive cancer cover, eight mental health sessions, self-referral physiotherapy and talking therapies, and the rewards programme itself.

+
Step 2 · Your choice

Cover Options

Out-patient limits, enhanced mental health cover, therapies, hospital list and excess. The usual levers that shape any private medical insurance premium.

+
Step 3 · Ongoing

Your Engagement

Points earned through activity build your Vitality status, which unlocks rewards, can lower your plan excess, and adjusts the claims element of your renewal price each year.

How It Works

Points, Status And What They Unlock

You earn Vitality points for daily steps, gym visits, annual health checks and activity logged through a connected device. Those points build your status across four tiers, and your tier does three things: unlocks better rewards, can reduce your plan excess, and adjusts the claims element of your renewal.

Couple staying active to earn Vitality points
BronzeWhere new members start
SilverAchievable for moderately active members
GoldRequires consistent engagement
PlatinumLargest rewards and renewal benefit

Points thresholds for each tier change periodically and vary by plan, so confirm the current requirements with our broker partners rather than relying on figures published elsewhere.

Worth Knowing Before You Buy

What ABC Pricing Is Actually Worth

Every other major insurer uses a no-claims discount. Vitality doesn't, and understanding the difference matters more than any reward on this page.

A

Age

Your premium rises each year because you're a year older. Typically around 3%. Nothing you can do about it, and every insurer applies something similar.

B

Base Inflation

Rising hospital fees, drug costs and medical technology across the whole market. Commonly cited in the 5 to 10% range for 2026. Outside your control.

C

Claims

Your claims history combined with your Vitality status. This is the only part your engagement influences, and it's an adjustment to your renewal rather than a discount on the whole premium.

The number that matters

Broker analysis of Vitality's own adviser material puts the C adjustment at roughly minus 7.5% at Platinum status with low claims, rising to around plus 35% for high claims combined with low engagement.

−7.5% to +35%
The realistic range on the C component, against a maximum no-claims discount of 70 to 75% at insurers using the traditional model.

Family claims are pooled

  • One family member's claim can move the whole policy into a higher pricing band at renewal, not just their own cover.

Disengagement costs you twice

  • Stop earning points and you lose the rewards, and your renewal rises faster because status isn't offsetting the claims element.
The honest comparison

ABC pricing is more transparent than the unexplained annual increases most insurers apply, and that's a real advantage. But the behavioural discount is capped at a fraction of what a traditional no-claims discount can reach over time. Vitality earns its keep through the rewards you use during the year, not through renewal savings. Judge it on that basis.

The Rewards

What The Rewards Are Actually Worth

This is where Vitality earns its premium, so it's worth doing the arithmetic on your own habits.

Apple Watch Benefit

Pay a reduced amount upfront, then hit monthly activity targets to cut the ongoing payments. Consistently active members can reduce them to nothing, but miss targets and you pay the balance.

Gym Discounts

Up to 50% off flexible monthly membership at Virgin Active, Nuffield Health and PureGym. On a £70 membership that's £35 a month, which can exceed the premium difference against a cheaper insurer on its own.

Weekly Active Rewards

Earn 12 activity points in a week and claim a Caffè Nero drink or an Odeon or Vue cinema ticket. There's also an app-based monthly reward game tied to weekly activity.

Waitrose Cashback

Up to 25% cashback on selected health food items. Small individually, but it accumulates for anyone doing a weekly shop there.

Reward partners, discount levels and qualifying thresholds change regularly, and some rewards depend on your status tier. Confirm what's currently available before letting rewards drive your decision.

Cost

How Much Does Vitality Cost?

Vitality's premiums generally sit above the market average for equivalent cover. Whether that's worth paying depends entirely on how much reward value you extract during the year, because the renewal benefit alone won't close the gap.

The starting price is notably flat for younger applicants, roughly similar whether you're in your twenties or early thirties, before rising more steeply from around fifty onwards. Your own figure depends on age, postcode, out-patient level, hospital list and excess.

Do the arithmetic before you decide

Work out what you'd actually claim from the rewards. If you already pay for a Virgin Active or PureGym membership, a 50% discount alone can be worth more than the premium difference against a cheaper insurer. If you don't go to the gym, don't want an Apple Watch and won't track your steps, you're paying an above-average premium for benefits you'll never touch. FAQs

Vitality Health Insurance FAQs

What does Vitality health insurance cover?

Personal Healthcare covers in-patient and day-patient treatment with comprehensive cancer cover as standard, eight CBT or counselling sessions a year bookable without a GP referral, self-referral physiotherapy and talking therapies, the Headspace app and a digital wellbeing library, plus the rewards programme itself. Weight-loss surgery is covered, which is unusual. Out-patient limits, enhanced mental health cover and a wider hospital list are optional.

What is Vitality's ABC pricing?

Vitality's renewal model, replacing a no-claims discount. A is Age, typically around 3% a year. B is Base medical inflation across the market, commonly cited in the 5 to 10% range for 2026. C is Claims, combined with your Vitality status, and it's the only element your engagement affects. C is an adjustment to your renewal, not a discount off your whole premium.

How much can Vitality's rewards programme save you at renewal?

Less than most people assume. Broker analysis of Vitality's adviser material puts the C adjustment at roughly minus 7.5% at Platinum status with low claims, and around plus 35% for high claims combined with low engagement. Compare that against traditional no-claims discounts, which can reach 70 to 75% over time. Vitality's value comes from the rewards you use during the year rather than from renewal savings.

Does Vitality cover mental health?

Yes, and more generously than its fitness-brand image suggests. Core cover includes eight CBT or counselling sessions a year, bookable directly through the Vitality app with no GP referral, plus the Headspace app and a library of digital wellbeing exercises. An enhanced add-on extends this to unlimited CBT and counselling, £1,500 of out-patient mental health spend, and 28 days of in-patient or day-patient treatment.

Does one family member's claim affect everyone's premium?

Yes. On a family policy claims are pooled, so one member's claim can push the whole policy into a higher pricing band at renewal rather than affecting only their own cover.

How does Vitality's Apple Watch benefit work?

You pay a reduced amount upfront, then hit monthly activity targets to cut the ongoing monthly payments. Consistently active members can reduce them to nothing, but the payments continue if you miss your targets, so it only works out free if you keep it up.

Is Vitality health insurance worth it?

It depends almost entirely on engagement. If you'll download the app, track your steps, book the health check and use the gym discount, the rewards can outweigh an above-average premium. If you know you won't, a traditional insurer with a no-claims discount will serve you better over time, because Vitality's behavioural discount is capped at a fraction of what a standard NCD reaches.
