Age Limits Explained

What's The Maximum Age For Health Insurance In The UK?

Updated July 2026

As the UK population ages and NHS waiting times remain a real concern, more people over 60 are turning to private health insurance. The question we hear most: is there actually an upper age limit? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on the insurer, some have none at all.

Whether you're specifically in your 60s, 70s or 80s, this guide breaks down exactly which insurers will take you on as a new applicant at each stage, and what it's likely to cost.

Worth Understanding

Moratorium vs Full Medical Underwriting

As a new customer, you'll join under one of two underwriting types, and this matters more the older you are. See our full medical underwriting explained guide for a deeper breakdown, including CPME and Continued Moratorium if you're switching provider.

Moratorium Underwriting

Commonly used, and preferred by people who'd rather not disclose their full medical history upfront. The insurer automatically excludes treatment for any condition you've had symptoms of or treatment for in the past five years. If you go two continuous years symptom and treatment free, that condition may then become covered.

Full Medical Underwriting (FMU)

Requires a detailed medical questionnaire at application. The insurer reviews your history and applies specific exclusions for anything they consider higher risk. This gives more certainty upfront about what is and isn't covered, but can mean more exclusions, especially for older applicants with more medical history behind them.

Why this matters more with age

Several insurers require FMU specifically once you're past a certain age (AXA beyond 75, WPA beyond 66), rather than the standard moratorium approach offered to younger applicants. It's worth understanding which route you'll be on before you apply.

Cost

How To Manage Costs As You Age

Premiums rise with age, but these levers can help keep things sensible.

Raise Your Excess

A higher policy excess can meaningfully reduce your monthly premium.

Scale Back Outpatients

Reducing or self-funding outpatient cover can bring the cost down.

Choose A Guided Hospital List

A focused local list often costs less than a nationwide one you won't use.

FAQs

Age Limits FAQs

What is the maximum age you can buy health insurance in the UK?

There isn't a single universal maximum. Aviva, Bupa and Saga have no upper age limit for new applicants at all. Others cap new entries between 66 and 85 depending on the provider, National Friendly to 85, The Exeter and Vitality to 80, AXA to 75, WPA unrestricted to 66, Freedom to 70.

Can I still get health insurance over 70?

Yes. Aviva, Bupa and Saga have no upper limit at all, and several others accept new applicants up to 75-80. Expect premiums of roughly £200-£320 a month for comprehensive cover at this stage.

Can I still get health insurance over 80?

Yes, though options narrow. Aviva, Bupa, Saga and National Friendly (to 85) still accept new applicants. Typical cost at this stage is £280-£400+ a month.

Is there a minimum age for health insurance?

Most insurers require you to be at least 18 to take out your own policy, though children can usually be added to a parent's policy from birth.

Does age affect what's covered, not just the price?

Yes, indirectly. Some insurers require full medical underwriting once you're past a certain age, rather than the standard moratorium approach, which can mean more exclusions for pre-existing conditions than a younger applicant would face.

If I'm already covered, do these age limits apply to me?

No, these caps apply to new applicants only. Once you're covered, insurers will typically continue renewing your policy indefinitely, sometimes well into your 90s, at their discretion.
