Bupa Health Insurance Review 2026

★★★★★ Defaqto (Comprehensive) ★★★★★ 4.5/5 Trustpilot Reviewed by Darren Lewis · Updated July 2026

Bupa is the UK's largest private health insurer, and one of only a handful rated 5 stars by Defaqto on its flagship plan. From January 2026 it also introduced Direct Access, letting members self-refer to a specialist for certain conditions without waiting for a GP referral first.

Strong across the board, particularly for hospital network size and mental health cover, and probably not as expensive as you might initially think, especially if you're switching after a recent claim. Whether it's the right fit depends on how much you value breadth of cover versus price.

The Small Print

What Bupa Doesn't Cover

Like every UK health insurer, Bupa doesn't cover pre-existing conditions from day one. Under standard moratorium underwriting, if you go two years without needing medication, treatment, diagnostic tests or advice for a condition after taking out the policy, that exclusion can be lifted.

Chronic, long-term conditions requiring ongoing care, such as arthritis, epilepsy or asthma, are also excluded, as is any elective treatment you haven't been referred for by a GP (or, since January 2026, via Bupa's Direct Access route for eligible conditions).

Cost

How Much Does Bupa Health Insurance Cost?

Your Bupa premium depends on your age, location, smoker status, plan level, excess and hospital list. As an indicative example, Bupa's own published data suggests a single non-smoker aged 30 to 50 on a Comprehensive plan with a £500 outpatient limit and £500 excess averages around £45 a month across major UK cities.

Man comparing Bupa health insurance quotes
Bupa can be more competitive than you'd expect

Bupa's switching criteria doesn't ask whether you've recently made a claim, only whether the underlying condition has since been resolved. That matters if you're switching from another insurer, since some providers push your premium up sharply at renewal after any recent claim, regardless of whether the condition cleared up. If that's happened to you, it's worth getting a Bupa quote even if you've assumed it would be the pricier option, since in this specific situation it can come out surprisingly competitive.

For Employers

Bupa For Business

Bupa offers business health insurance across three tiers: micro-business cover for one or two employees, small business cover for up to 250 employees, and corporate cover for larger organisations. Employers often value the faster return to work it can support for staff needing treatment.

FAQs

Bupa Health Insurance FAQs

How do I contact Bupa?

How much is Bupa health insurance?

It depends on your age, location, smoker status and the plan, excess and hospital list you choose. Get a personalised quote for an accurate figure.

Can I switch my health insurance to Bupa?

Yes, you can switch at any time of year. It involves a quick chat with an adviser to check some medical questions and confirm eligibility.

What is Bupa Direct Access?

Live from January 2026, Direct Access lets members self-refer to a specialist for certain conditions without waiting for a GP referral first, speeding up the claims process.

Is Bupa expensive compared to other insurers?

It depends on the situation. If you're switching from another provider after a recent claim pushed your renewal price up, Bupa is well worth comparing, since its switching criteria looks at whether the condition has resolved rather than penalising you for the claim itself, which can make it surprisingly competitive.

Is Bupa the best health insurance provider in the UK?

There's no single best provider for everyone. Bupa is a strong all-rounder with the largest hospital network and a 5-star Defaqto rating on its Comprehensive plan, but the right choice depends on your budget and priorities.
